“I don’t have a signature style,” says Susan Wintersteen of Savvy Interiors in San Diego, CA. “I’m just not the kind of designer who has a specific look she’s known for and brings that to every space—every project is unique, just like every client.” But if she had to give a name to the aesthetic she gravitates to, she’d call it “organic refinement.”

What is organic refinement? “It’s a look that’s very natural, very neutral,” she says. “It’s about bringing the outside in with natural elements—but not like in traditional ‘organic’ style where you’re looking at raw, rustic materials. I like to bring a higher degree of finish to a project.”

This approach worked perfectly for the owner of a Del Mar, CA, kitchen recently featured in Cambria Style magazine. The homeowner wanted an update that felt modern but relaxed, welcoming, family-friendly—and closely connected to the home’s oceanfront setting. Wintersteen delivered, designing a gathering space with a bright, open, organic California vibe thanks to the creamy color palette, natural wood accents, woven rattan bar stools, and the soft waves of Cambria’s Ironsbridge quartz design on the counters. Adding classic details—mosaic tile on the backsplash, an arched custom range hood, and a mix of gold and black metallic accents—created that extra level of refinement, Wintersteen says.

There’s more to the design than just the good looks of popular kitchen countertops, of course. The waterfall edge on the Cambria-topped island makes a bold visual statement but its cornerless form is also safer for young children—an essential point for a homeowner anticipating plenty of visits from grandkids. A large cooktop and fridge from Monogram, a built-in coffee bar, and plenty of prep and serving areas make the kitchen ideal for cooking and entertaining, and the furniture-style accents throughout make it feel inviting. Most important, says Wintersteen, the elegant but drama-free interiors don’t distract from the main attraction outside. “The whole point is to keep the eye focused on those beautiful water views.”
